What 湎 means
It describes sinking into drink or becoming consumed by a pursuit. In 酒誥, a chapter of the Chinese classic Book of Documents, 湎于酒 warns against sinking into wine. 《說文解字》, an early Chinese character dictionary, gives the same “sink into wine” gloss.
Later use extended the image to other excesses. The water component evokes liquid; 面 supplies the sound.
Literary and admonishing; it casts excess as a loss of self-command.
Not merely “drunk”: it implies being lost in the habit.

Questions people ask
1Why does 湎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
