Waterside Character

8384/20992

溿 names the land beside a body of water: a shore or waterside. It is a rare dictionary character; Chinese records connect it to the related spelling 沜.

What 溿 means

It means the edge of a body of water. In Chinese dictionary tradition, 溿 names a shore or waterside. Mandarin dictionaries give the reading pàn, a pinyin spelling pronounced roughly like pan with a falling tone.

The related spelling 沜 appears in 玉篇, an early Chinese character dictionary. A Tang dynasty place name, 茱萸沜, uses 沜 for a waterside place. A 2024 Taiwanese character-variant record says 溿 is not listed in 說文, another early Chinese dictionary, and cites later dictionary records in 龍龕手鑑 and 字彙.

Chinese references also link 沜 with the older form 泮 and a sense of flowing water. Japanese references give 濿 the reading はん (han) and retain the shore sense.

How do I type 濿?

Cangjie users can enter 溿 with EWFQ. Taiwan’s character database lists EWFQ as its Cangjie input sequence. Cangjie is a Chinese character input method based on component shapes, so this sequence works only with a Cangjie keyboard.

Why does 濿 look different?

The character stays the same; the font draws its visible form. Fonts for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text can vary in stroke proportions or regional forms without changing 溿. A missing-box symbol means the active font lacks its glyph; a font with CJK coverage should display it.

As of 2024, Taiwan’s character record said default fonts in Windows 10 and later include 濿. That reports font coverage, not identical designs across apps.

Literary and dictionary-like; not ordinary casual writing.

Why is 濿 not displaying?

The active font may lack 濿. A font with CJK character coverage should render it, though stroke details can vary between fonts.

How is 濿 read in Japanese?

Japanese references give はん (han) as its reading and list the sense shore or waterside. A general Japanese keyboard may not suggest this rare character.
