What 漬 means
It means soaking or steeping, and can also mean a stain.
A narrow written strip from the Qin dynasty, an early Chinese dynasty, uses 漬 for soaking rice to make wine. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, later defines the character as soaking.
Chinese also uses 漬 for dampness, contamination, or a stain. Chinese 醃漬 and Japanese 漬物 are food terms for pickling; in Japanese, 〜漬け after a word can describe food soaked in the named seasoning or, figuratively, being immersed in the named activity, as in 勉強漬け (“immersed in study”).

3Questions people ask
1Why does 漬 look different in Chinese and Japanese text?
Chinese and Japanese fonts can draw the same Han character in different regional forms. As of 2026, Unicode describes these shape differences as a font issue; a changed drawing does not by itself make it a different character.
