What 烟 means
It began as a character for smoke. An earlier form appears in writing on bronze objects from the late Spring and Autumn period, an era in ancient China. In 烟, 火 signals a fire-related meaning and 因 is a sound component. Later meanings included mist, soot used to make ink, tobacco, and opium; imported tobacco added the tobacco sense in the late Ming period.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 烟 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
