Character 然

9015/20992

然 (Mandarin rán) can mean “so,” “thus,” or “that way”; inside a modern word, read the whole word. Alone, it can affirm “that is so,” but sounds deliberately classical, not like everyday “okay.” Its older meaning was “to burn,” later written more specifically with 燃.

What 然 means

It can mean “so” or “yes”; read the whole word.

In Classical Chinese, 然 can affirm a statement, point back to something as “like that,” describe a state, or connect clauses. Modern Chinese compounds assign those jobs to whole words such as 当然, 然后, and 然而; translating 然 as “yes” every time breaks the sentence.

Japanese also uses 然 in compounds. Readings include ぜん and ねん, as well as しかり (“that is so”), しかし (“but”), and しかも (“moreover”). The shared written character does not carry Mandarin rán into Japanese.

Why does 然 mean burn?

Burning was its earlier meaning; 燃 later made it explicit. An old Chinese character dictionary, the Shuowen Jiezi, analyzes 然 as built from 火, the meaning component, and 肰, the sound component. The character originally wrote a verb for burning.

A form on a bronze inscription from the early Spring and Autumn period is the earliest one catalogued; later forms appear on Warring States bronzes and manuscripts.

As 然 took on abstract meanings such as “so” and grammatical roles, 燃 became the clearer spelling for “burn.” That history explains the fire connection, but “burn” is usually the wrong translation inside a modern compound.

Is 然 a normal reply?

It sounds like deliberate classical assent, not casual everyday agreement.

If it directly answers a statement, “that is so” is a reasonable reading. Without something clear to affirm, the character cannot tell you whether the sender is quoting older language, playing with register, or has sent an incomplete word; ask what they meant.

Bare 然 is bookish; established Chinese and Japanese compounds take their tone from the whole word.

Do not send bare 然 expecting it to land as an ordinary casual “okay.”

Questions people ask

1

Why does 然 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
