What 煍 means
Its core sense is a change of color.
The earliest dictionary record located is in the Yupian, a Chinese character dictionary first compiled in 543 and revised later. Its entry gives 變色 (“change color”), but no date for when the character was created. The earlier Shuowen Jiezi dictionary does not list 煍.
A Ming-era prose passage uses 煍然變色 to describe a person visibly changing color. Southwestern Mandarin, a regional variety spoken in southwest China, also has the reading qiāo (roughly “chyow,” with an aspirated start and a high, steady tone), meaning “to smoke or fumigate.”

1Why does 煍 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
