What 燌 means
It means burning, with an early gloss of “burn fields.”
The related form 焚 appears in oracle-bone divination inscriptions (carved on bone or turtle shell), then in bronze writing, bamboo slips, seal forms, and Qin slips. Later sources also record general or punitive burning, drying, and “collapse.”
焚 is the usual form in ordinary Chinese prose; 燌 is its documented variant.
