What 燏 means
It names the glow cast by a burning fire. In Mandarin Chinese, its Pinyin reading is yù. The vowel is made with an “ee”-like tongue position and rounded lips; the fourth tone falls. 燏 is a noun for light from fire, not a general verb for burning.
What do dictionaries and court records show?
The record reaches from firelight glosses to a prince’s name. The Yupian, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 燏 as “appearance of light.” The later Guangyun and Jiyun dictionaries specify firelight. The 2024 edition of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education character dictionary notes that Shuowen jiezi, an early dictionary, does not include 燏.
A Ming court chronicle records 燏 in a prince’s personal name, 佶燏. This documents a name use alongside the dictionary sense.
How do I type 燏?
Use Pinyin yu or the Cangjie code FNHB. A Mandarin Pinyin input method accepts yu without a tone mark; choose 燏 from the candidates. Cangjie uses FNHB, whose key names are 火弓竹月.
Font support is separate from input. As of 2024, Taiwan’s CNS character database lists 燏 in the default fonts for Windows 10 and later. If it appears as a box on another setup, the active font lacks the glyph; use a CJK font that includes it.
Literary and name-specific; in an ordinary message, the choice may read as deliberate.
Do not substitute 煜 for 燏 just because the Mandarin readings match.
