What 燤 means
Its better-attested dictionary sense is “smoky appearance.”
The compound 燤焥 describes a smoky appearance. A second gloss, “fire cut off,” appears in 類篇, but the Kangxi Dictionary notes that 集韻 does not list 燤 under that rhyme, so the entry may be a textual error. Treat the smoke sense as the safer reading.
The earliest dictionary witness located is 集韻, a Song dynasty rhyme dictionary completed in 1039; the character also appears in 類篇. Japanese kanji references retain the smoke-related sense but list readings specific to Japanese. These entries show a dictionary trail without establishing when or why the character was created.
Literary and dictionary-like; it reads as an uncommon written word in ordinary chat.
Alone, its meaning is hard to recover without knowing the dictionary sense.
