Chinese character 燨

9193/20992

燨 is a rare Chinese character glossed as “fire”; it is recorded as a variant of 爔, which dictionaries also link to 曦, “sunlight.” Its surviving trail is mainly in dictionaries, names, and historical records, not as an everyday chat reaction. Mandarin pinyin xī is a useful input lead, but many characters share it.

What 燨 means

It is a fire gloss with a documented link to sunlight.

A 2024 Taiwan Ministry of Education entry treats 燨 as the same character as 爔 and notes that it is absent from Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary. In the older dictionary tradition, 爔 is glossed as “fire” and linked to 曦, a character for sunlight. The sunlight connection comes through 爔; it does not make every use of 燨 mean daylight.

In the Yupian dictionary tradition (about 543), 爔 is glossed as “fire”; Longkan Shoujian, another Chinese dictionary, records 燨 as a related form in 997. Historical-text records also include personal names, official documents, and genealogies. Together, these entries document a variant history rather than a newly created sign.

How do I type 燨?

Try Mandarin pinyin xī, then confirm the displayed character.

Pinyin xī is a Mandarin input spelling, but many characters share it, so it narrows a search without identifying 燨. If it does not appear in your input method, use handwriting or component lookup; confirm the glyph before entering it in a name or source transcription.

A rare dictionary and name form; alone, it reads as written text, not an everyday reaction.

Alone, it can look like an unexplained name or a mistyped character.

Why does 燨 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
