What 燺 means
Drying or roasting over fire — read kào.
The 'withered' character 槁/槀 appears in China's oldest inscriptions — oracle bones, bronzes, Warring States manuscripts — while 燺 itself never headed the 說文, the Han-era dictionary; as of 2024 Taiwan's Ministry of Education lists it as a 熇 variant.
熇 broadened to fierce heat and 熇熇 'blazing', imagery classical texts turned on oppressive rule.
Literary and lexicographic — a dictionary word, not a casual reaction.
Don't read it as a casual 'fire!' reaction.
