What 狗 means
In Chinese, 狗 is the everyday word for “dog.”
In Mandarin, its reading is written gǒu in Pinyin and sounds roughly like “go” with a low, dipping tone. If you are looking for “dog in Chinese,” 狗 is the ordinary word.
Where did 狗 come from?
Its older written form pairs an animal sign with a sound clue. In bronze and seal forms, 犬 marks the dog and 句 serves as a historical sound component. Bronze-script examples place 狗 by the mid-Western Zhou. Bronze inscriptions are writing on metal objects; seal script is an older writing style. The old sound clue does not predict modern Mandarin pronunciation.
During the Shang, Zhou, and Han periods, records place dogs in livestock keeping, hunting and guarding, and sacrificial or ceremonial settings. Their historical roles went beyond companionship; that history does not make a present-day message about 狗 a ritual reference.
Is 狗 rude when used for a person?
It can be; self-use and person-directed use differ. By 2020, Chinese internet use included X狗 labels built from a role or state to mock the writer’s own situation.
Usage research published in 2023 distinguishes joking self-labels from dog-based labels aimed contemptuously at someone else. A person describing themselves as X狗 has not thereby invited you to call them one.
Neutral for the animal; a person label can be playful or contemptuous depending on who applies it.
Someone describing themselves as X狗 has not automatically invited you to call them one.

1Why does 狗 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
