Chinese character 狽

9470/20992

狽 names a legendary animal said to accompany wolves, but its modern Chinese use is mainly in compounds, especially 狼狽. That word describes a predicament or an embarrassed, disheveled state; 狼狽為奸 instead accuses two sides of collusion. Early examples appear in oracle-bone and bronze inscriptions, while a Tang-dynasty account gives the famous animal story.

What 狽 means

狽 has an old animal sense; modern Chinese mainly uses it in compounds.

Early examples of 狽 appear in oracle-bone inscriptions—records written on bones used for divination—and on bronze vessels, including in personal names. The graph is described as combining 犬 and 貝. 說文, an early Chinese character dictionary, does not list 狽; 玉篇, a later dictionary, explains it through 狼狽.

A Tang-dynasty account attributed to the writer Duan Chengshi says 狽 had very short forelegs and rode with wolves; separated from them, it was helpless. This is a legend explaining the word, not a zoological description. When 狽 arrives alone in a message, the surrounding sentence matters more than an assumed mood.

Why does 狽 appear in 狼狽?

狼狽 describes a predicament or a flustered, embarrassed state.

Early Chinese examples use the compound for difficult or blocked circumstances; later usage also describes someone disheveled or embarrassed. 狽 on its own is therefore a poor substitute for an everyday word for a feeling.

Can 狼狽 accuse someone of wrongdoing?

Only in 狼狽為奸.

This four-character Chinese idiom accuses two people or groups of colluding to do wrong. That charge belongs to the full phrase; 狼狽 alone means an awkward predicament or fluster.

The related Korean word 낭패 means a plan has failed or brought serious trouble; Japanese 狼狽 means being flustered or panicked. These are related words, but their meanings do not transfer into Chinese automatically.

On its own, 狽 is literary and uncommon; modern Chinese use is concentrated in compounds, especially 狼狽.

狼狽為奸 accuses people of collusion; it does not mean merely looking awkward.

Why does 狽 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
