猓 is an obscure Chinese character with historical senses: it names a long-tailed monkey in 猓然 and appears in 猓玀, an old lolo exonym for the Yi people. Treat 猓玀 as historical wording, not a neutral modern name; 猓 alone is not an emoji-style message.

What 猓 means

By itself, 猓 is an obscure historical Chinese character.

The 2024 Taiwan Ministry of Education entry says 猓 is absent from Shuowen and gives no named inventor. It cites later evidence, including a Jin-era poem using 猓然 and the Book of Northern Qi mentioning a 猓然 item.

猓 is phono-semantic: 犭 marks the animal category and 果 supplies the sound. That explains the writing strategy; it does not make every word containing 猓 mean monkey.

Why does 猓 appear in 猓然 and 猓玀?

The compound decides whether 猓 names an animal or an ethnonym.

猓然 keeps the older animal sense. 猓玀 uses the graph in a historical name for Yi communities; dictionaries also record 猓猓, and simplified Chinese writes the compound as 猓猡.

猓玀 has two listed Mandarin readings, guǒluó and luǒluó, so pinyin input can expose the same guoluo term under different first syllables. Check the whole compound before choosing a candidate.

Can I use 猓玀 for the Yi people?

No — use the community's current name, not this historical exonym.

In a 2025 anthropological account, 猓玀/Lolo is treated as an old pejorative exonym; modern writing uses Yi, with Nuosu naming a specific Yi community. Quote the term when discussing a source, but do not present it as a neutral self-name.

Historical Chinese lexical material; the ethnic compound is archival and socially marked.

Do not use 猓玀 as a neutral name for Yi people.

Questions people ask

2

Is 猓玀 a neutral name for the Yi people?

No. It is a historical exonym with derogatory connotations; use Yi or the community's own name unless you are quoting a historical source.

Why do input tools show two readings for 猓玀?

They do. Reference entries list guǒluó and luǒluó, so pinyin input can expose the same term under either first syllable; confirm the full compound before selecting it.
