What 獜 means
It can mean a healthy dog or a mythical beast. Han-era lexicography—Chinese dictionaries from the Han dynasty—records the dog sense. The Classic of Mountains and Seas, an old Chinese book about geography and strange creatures, describes its tiger claws and armor; 犭 marks the animal category.
Is 獜 the same as 麟?
No. 麟 is the standard character for the qilin. In later scribal use, 獜 sometimes served as its shortened form, though both characters have distinct meanings.
As of 2026, Korean Hanja name lists give 獜 the readings 린/인 (roughly “rin/in”) and glosses “sturdy” or “healthy.”
Literary and uncommon; in casual chat, it reads as a deliberately obscure choice.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
