What 甭 means
It means “needn't” for a need, and “don't” before an action. In 甭等我了, it means “you needn't wait for me.” In 甭想完成, it blocks the action: “don't count on finishing.”
That second sense grows from “no need”: a listener can take the lack of need as an instruction to stop. So 甭 overlaps with 不用 and 不必 (“needn't”) and 别 and 不要 (“don't”), but does not mean only one of them.
Where did 甭 come from?
It writes a spoken contraction of 不用 as one character. The compact form gives a fast spoken phrase a single written character. Dictionaries mark it as colloquial Northern Mandarin, so it keeps that conversational flavor on the page.
A 997 character dictionary called Longkan Shoujian records 甭 with a different reading. The modern reading, béng, developed later from 不用 said quickly. 甮 is recorded as a variant; 嫑 is a separate contraction of 不要, not another spelling of 甭.
What does 甭 mean when someone sends it?
Read it as “no need” or “don't”; the next words settle which. 甭管他 tells someone not to get involved; 甭生气 tells them not to get angry. The word itself is not an insult, but a short directive can sound clipped when the relationship is tense.
Colloquial and Northern-flavored Mandarin; in writing it keeps a spoken tone.
With a stranger, client, or senior person, 甭 can sound abrupt; 不必 or 不用 makes deference clearer.

2Is 甭 the same as 别?
Sometimes. Before an action it can mean “don't,” but in 您甭客气 it means “no need” and reassures someone who has thanked you.
Why does 甭 show as a box?
The current font may lack its glyph. A font with Chinese-character coverage can display it; the box changes the display, not the character's meaning.
