Chinese character 畟

10080/20992

畟 is an uncommon Chinese character whose classical use in 畟畟 describes a plough cutting deeply into soil. Sent alone today, it reads as literary or obscure; its earlier inscriptional history is more contested than that familiar farming sense.

What 畟 means

In 畟畟, it describes a plough cutting deep into soil.

That doubled form appears in 畟畟良耜, a line from the Classic of Poetry. The poem follows ploughing, sowing, and harvest, then gives thanks to 社稷—the land and grain deities.

A 2025 paleographic study places the earliest forms it discusses in Shang oracle-bone inscriptions at Yinxu—writing carved on bones or shells for divination. It argues that many examples outside personal names referred to abnormal or troubling conditions, including dreams and bodily signs; earlier scholars read some forms as 鬼 or 凶. This early interpretation remains contested.

Is 畟 the same as 鬼 or 稷?

No: they have historical links, but are not interchangeable.

Some ancient forms of 畟 and 鬼 look alike. A 2025 paleographic study argues that their writing patterns had separated by the middle-to-late reign of Shang king Wuding, though later scribes sometimes confused them.

Early forms of 稷 and 禝 used 畟 as a sound-hinting component—a part that points toward pronunciation—so this is a historical construction link, not permission to substitute one character for another.

Literary and antiquarian; alone in a casual message, it looks like a rare character chosen for you to decipher.

Give 畟 a classical phrase or historical context; alone, its ploughing sense will not be clear.

Why does 畟 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
