Chinese character 疺

In Mandarin’s standard spelling system, 疺 is read fá (roughly “fah,” with rising pitch) for thin or tired, or biǎn (roughly “byen,” low then rising) for ill. The Chinese sentence around it tells you which meaning fits.

What 疺 means

Bronze inscriptions preserve an early form of 乏. Its top stroke slants where 正 (“straight”) has a horizontal top stroke; one scholarly interpretation reads the contrast as “not straight.” That history belongs to 乏 itself.

Classical Chinese sources also use 乏 for lack and fatigue, and for a screen that shielded people near an archery target from arrows. A Song dynasty rhyme dictionary, 集韻, groups entries by sound and records 疺 separately with its readings.

Why does 疺 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
