What 痒 means
痒 means an itch, a tickle, or a restless urge. In Mandarin, 痒痒 can signal wanting; Japanese uses 痒 in 痒い (“itchy”), pronounced “kah-yoo-ee.”
Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 痒 as 瘍, a sore; it says 疒 marks illness and 羊 supplies the sound. Older forms appear in Chu manuscripts, from an ancient Chinese state, before regular script became standard. Later Chinese uses include itch, tickling, and wanting.

1Why does 痒 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
