Character Wen

瘟, pronounced wēn in Mandarin, names an acute contagious epidemic or plague in Chinese. It lives in compounds such as 瘟疫, 鸡瘟, and 犬瘟; aimed at a person, it turns insulting, meaning dull or lifeless. The epidemic idea is older than this disease-marked form: the term 疫 predates 瘟 in Chinese records.

What 瘟 means

It names an acute contagious epidemic.

瘟 is a sound-plus-meaning character: the top part, 疒, called the sickness radical, marks illness, while 昷 gives the sound wēn. So the shape tells you illness plus pronunciation, not a picture of disease.

The history separates concept from character. 疫, the shorter epidemic word, appears in Shang-period oracle-bone records, writing scratched on bone for divination. The Taiwan Ministry of Education's 2024 entry says 瘟 is absent from Shuowen, the early character dictionary, and quotes Baopuzi, an early philosophical text, for an early use. A Sui-dynasty disease treatise then separated epidemic syndromes from neighboring fever and seasonal-disease labels.

What does 瘟 mean when someone sends it?

Context decides whether it names illness or attacks someone.

In 瘟疫 it means human epidemic or pestilence; in 鸡瘟 or 犬瘟 it names an acute contagious disease in chickens or dogs. The MOE entry also records a figurative insult use: a curse, or saying someone is dull and without spirit, as in 瘟头瘟脑.

If it arrives alone, read the sentence around it before reacting. In a health or farm discussion it is descriptive; pointed at you, assume hostility unless the relationship clearly makes it teasing.

Why does 瘟 get confused with 温 or 疫?

疒 means illness; 温 means warmth, while 疫 is the older epidemic word.

瘟 and 温/溫 share the same sound part, so copy it from the palette above if you need the exact one. The quick check is the left or top radical: sickness-marked 瘟 is plague, water-marked 温 is warm or gentle.

In Japanese, 瘟 has the reading eyami and means an epidemic or malignant infectious disease; 瘟病 is one listed compound. CJK fonts may draw the lower part differently across devices; that changes the glyph shape, not the meaning.

Literal medical; literary in older texts; insulting when aimed at a person.

Do not aim 瘟 at a person; it can read as a curse.

Why does 瘟 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
