盗 (steal, thief)

盗 means “steal” or “thief” in Chinese and Japanese. In Chinese compounds it can mark image theft, piracy, or account theft; sent alone, it can sound like an accusation.

What 盗 means

It means stealing, robbing, or a thief. In Chinese, 盗 can name the act or the offender; in Japanese, it can also mean stealing or doing something secretly. A character-history account separates an early graph for flooding in oracle-bone and bronze inscriptions—records carved on bone or shell and cast on bronze—from a later theft graph. It explains the theft graph as 㳄, associated with saliva or craving, above 皿, a vessel. Legal slips from China’s Qin dynasty and manuscripts from Mawangdui attest the theft sense.

What does 盗 mean when someone sends it?

A lone 盗 is a blunt theft reference. In Chinese social-platform usage, 盗图 refers to using someone else’s image without permission; 盗版 marks pirated media, software, or publications; 盗号 refers to account theft or takeover. If someone sends only 盗, it may be a thief label or a charge that you took something; read it as a joke only when context supports it.

Why does 盗 look like 盜?

盗 and 盜 are variant forms of the same character. Simplified Chinese and standard Japanese writing use 盗; traditional Chinese uses 盜. Their upper parts differ. The character-history account distinguishes an early flood graph built from 㳄舟 (舟 means “boat”) from the later theft graph built from 㳄皿 (皿 means “vessel”). Their visual overlap does not make the modern theft sense a literal boat story.

Blunt and accusatory; 盗 fits a clear theft term or an obvious joke, not a casual reaction.

Alone, it can mean “thief” or “you stole it.” Name the object and action when stakes are real.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 盗 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
