What 睗 means
睗 means “look quickly”; it can also write the sense “grant.”
On Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, the bronze plate called 虢季子白盤 carries 王睗乘馬, a line recording a king granting horses after military service. The inscription is a written record of a royal award, giving 睗 its grant sense.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 睗 as 目疾視也: looking quickly or sharply. The classical pairing 睒睗 carries that swift-glance sense. In the inscription, 睗 instead writes the grant sense associated with 賜; the sentence selects the reading.
What if someone sends me 睗?
Treat a lone 睗 as historical text; context decides its sense.
Without surrounding words, there is no reliable cue between “grant” and “look quickly.” If it arrives in an ordinary message, ask what the writer meant instead of guessing.
Uncommon, literary, and inscriptional; it suits a classical quotation or historical discussion, not ordinary everyday writing.
Without a sentence, don’t choose between “grant” and “quick look.”
