What 瞞 means
It means to conceal facts or deceive someone. An early dictionary glosses 瞞 as “平目”: lowered or closed eyes. The classic text Xunzi uses 瞞瞞然 for that closed-eyed look. From obscured sight came the wider sense of hiding the truth and misleading someone.
瞞 pairs 目, eye, with 㒼 for sound. Later use centers on concealment and deception in compounds and literary examples, rather than on eyes alone.
Is 瞞 the same as 瞒?
Yes: 瞒 is the simplified form of 瞞. Keep 瞞 in traditional Chinese and use 瞒 in simplified Chinese. The difference is written form, not a new meaning.
Language changes the live reading. Mandarin centers on hiding facts and deceiving; Japanese also lists “dim or hard to see” and “feel ashamed,” with compounds such as 瞞着 and 欺瞞. Read the surrounding language before choosing a sense.
Learned and written: compounds such as 隱瞞 and 欺瞞 make the concealment sense clearest.
A lone 瞞 needs context; it is not a universal reaction symbol.

Yes. Japanese references preserve a モン reading in 瞞然 for shame; that is not the default Mandarin reading.
