瞦

Bright-eye character

瞦 means bright, lively eyes, especially the gleam in the pupil. It is a rare character preserved in older Chinese writing; later dictionaries describe 睛 as the commonly used counterpart for this sense. If someone sends 瞦 alone, treat it as a character to identify or explain, not a standard chat reaction.

What 瞦 means

瞦 means bright, lively eyes, especially the gleam in the pupil.

An early written use appears in a passage attributed to the Western Han, an early Chinese dynasty, in the Dàdài Lǐjì, a collection of ritual and teaching texts. It occurs in 瞦合. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, describes it as the pupil's shining essence: 目 is the eye component and 喜 supplies the sound.

Later dictionaries shorten the gloss to “eye” or “pupil” and describe eyes that are bright and spirited.

Why is 瞦 connected to 睛?

Duan Yucai's commentary says 睛 was the commonly used form.

His note on the Shuowen Jiezi explains the “essence” as the eye's gleam and says writers commonly used 睛 instead. That is a documented word relationship; it does not make the characters interchangeable in every context.

A 2018 document from Hong Kong's Chinese Language Interface Advisory Committee lists 瞦 among characters submitted for personal-name use. That records a naming context, not an everyday chat convention.

What does 瞦 mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as a rare character, not a standard reaction.

As of 2026, no emoji-style reaction convention is documented for 瞦. When it arrives alone, ask whether it is a name, quotation, or a request to identify the character; the surrounding text supplies the reading.

Rare and literary, with a documented personal-name context; it reads as a character rather than chat shorthand.

Sent alone, it can look unexplained or mistyped.

Questions people ask

3

Is 瞦 an emoji?

No. 瞦 is a Han character; its appearance depends on text font coverage, not emoji artwork.

Why does 瞦 show as a box?

Usually, the selected font has no glyph for 瞦. If the app's fallback fonts cannot supply one either, the character may appear as a box or blank space.

Can 瞦 be used in a name?

It can. A 2018 Hong Kong Chinese Language Interface Advisory Committee document lists 瞦 among characters submitted for personal-name use; the final rules depend on jurisdiction.
