What 矚 means

It means to watch closely or direct your attention toward something.

The 2024 Taiwan Ministry of Education variant entry says 矚 is absent from 說文 and records dictionary definitions of seeing deeply. Its lexical job was to narrow ordinary seeing toward deliberate, intense attention: 目 supplies the eye-related meaning and 屬 supplies the sound. A secure first written attestation remains unresolved in the sources reviewed.

Early literary examples preserve the physical reading: 眺矚 describes looking across the Central Plain, and 遠矚 describes looking into the distance. Later compounds turn that posture into figurative attention and foresight.

The meaning changes with the compound.

That change is visible in the compounds. In 矚目, the character means that a person or event draws attention; in 高瞻遠矚, looking far becomes a compliment about long-range judgment; in 眺矚, it stays a physical gaze into the distance.

These are documented relationships, not visual guesses. 矚 is built with 目 for meaning and 屬 for sound; 瞻 and 眺 are established partners in compounds. In Simplified Chinese, the corresponding written form is 瞩.

Formal and bookish: 矚 belongs naturally in compounds and literary prose, not as a casual chat reaction.

Do not swap 矚目 with 觸目: one attracts attention; the other means what meets the eye.
