Chinese character 矺

10747/20992

In Taiwanese Hakka, 矺 means “press down”; older Chinese dictionaries also record senses linked to 磔, a thudding sound, and a plant name. It belongs in a Hakka phrase or a historical quotation, not as a free-standing chat reaction. A 2014 study identifies a seal graph read as 矺 in a personal name during China's Warring States period.

What 矺 means

The reading depends on language and context.

In Taiwanese Hakka, 矺 is a verb for pressing down. The Taiwan Ministry of Education's Hakka dictionary gives compounds for pressing something onto a surface, crushing it, marking it with a stone, and a New Year's money term. Older Chinese dictionaries also link 矺 with 磔 (“strike”), record a thudding sound for something thrown down, and give a plant name. These are distinct recorded uses, not one general chat meaning.

Why does 矺 appear in old texts?

Its written history predates digital text by centuries.

In 2014, a study of ancient seals reported a graph read as 矺 in a person's name on a seal from China's Warring States period, when rival states fought for control. It also discusses a passage in the Shiji, an early Chinese history book, that describes ten princesses as 矺死; a commentator connects 矺 there with 磔 and dismemberment as punishment. These examples show the character in a name and historical writing, but do not establish one original purpose.

Can I send 矺 by itself?

Only when the recipient shares its language or source.

Alone, it has no stable chat reading. A Hakka reader may understand the press-down verb; in a historical quotation, it may carry the 磔-related sense; otherwise the recipient may not know which reading you intend. In general chat, include the surrounding Hakka phrase or explain the quotation.

It is a normal Hakka verb in its documented phrases, but outside Hakka or historical writing it is opaque.

Alone, 矺 gives too little context to identify its reading.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 矺 look like a box?

It can. Taiwan's CNS 11643 character registry says Windows 10 and later include a default glyph, but other CJK fonts may not.

Is 矺 rude to send?

Not inherently. The historical 磔-related sense is violent, while the Hakka verb is neutral. The surrounding phrase makes the intended reading clearer.
