What 硋 means
It means “obstruct” or “hinder”; 硋 is a variant of 礙/碍.
The received Liezi, an ancient Chinese philosophical text, uses 硋 for “impede.” Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 礙 as “stop”: 石, the stone component, points to the meaning, while 疑 supplies the sound. The sense runs from blocking a way to hindering or holding something back.
In Eastern Min, 硋器 means pottery or earthenware. A Fuzhou report from 2025 also records 硋 as a local term for coarse pottery.
Classical or regional; context identifies which word or sense is intended.

Questions people ask
1Why does 硋 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
