What 碿 means
It has two dictionary senses: “to grind” and “stone fragments.”
The earliest dated dictionary record is in the Song-dynasty Jiyun (《集韻》), compiled in 1039. It records the grinding sense; the date belongs to the dictionary entry, not the character’s origin.
A later Chinese dictionary records the second sense, “stone fragments.” The written form places 石 (“stone”) on the left and 屑 on the right; 屑 is a component of 碿, not a substitute for the whole character. A Japanese character reference also gives a reading written in kana as セツ.
Because 碿 is rare, reserve it for a quotation or specialist text; explain the intended sense for general readers.
