What 祕 means
It means secret, hidden, or mysterious. 祕 meaning in Chinese depends on the word around it: something withheld, hard to know, or kept as a guarded method.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary of character forms, defines 祕 as divine or god-related. That is why does 祕 have 示 on its left: that part points to ritual and the divine, while 必 on the right gives the sound.
Why does 祕 sometimes become 秘?
They are variant spellings of one word. 祕 keeps the 示 side; 秘 uses 禾 instead. Taiwan’s education dictionary treats 祕 as the standard entry, while the 祕 Japanese old form is kept for older spellings and 秘 is expected in ordinary Japanese.
So the choice tells you about the source, not a new meaning. Keep 祕 when copying a Traditional Chinese text or an older Japanese spelling; type 秘 for normal modern Japanese.
What should I read when someone sends 祕?
Read “secret” first, then check the word around it. Someone sent me 祕 alone is usually a fragment, label, or typo for part of a longer word. A bare 祕 is a typed character, not a reaction, so ask for the sentence if there is no context.
A written-character choice: traditional, old-form, or source-specific depending on language context.
Do not assume “mysterious”: in 祕書, it means a secretary.

1Why does 祕 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
