What 祚 means
Start with blessing; the compound narrows it. Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 祚 as 福 (“good fortune”), parsing 示 as the ritual component and 乍 as the sound component. The character appears in Warring States Chu manuscripts and later in small-seal script, a formal writing style.
Classical Chinese compounds extend blessing to rulership, dynastic fortune, and lifespan: 踐祚 means accession to the throne; 皇祚, a dynasty’s fortune; 年祚, lifespan. Japanese kanji dictionaries list these senses too.
Formal and literary; chiefly in established compounds and older prose.
Don’t read every 祚 as “throne”: 福祚 means blessing.

1Why does 祚 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
