Auspicious Sign

11151/20992

禎 means an auspicious sign and, by extension, good fortune. It appears in Chinese compounds and Japanese personal names; alone, it needs context rather than reading as a universal chat reaction. Simplified Chinese writes 祯, and Japanese name references also record the older form 禎.

What 禎 means

禎 means an auspicious sign or good fortune.

An early dictionary entry appears in the Eastern Han work Shuowen Jiezi, a dictionary of Chinese characters. It glosses 禎 as auspicious and analyzes it as 示, which supplies the omen-related sense, plus 貞, which supplies the sound. The character combines meaning and sound; it is not a drawing of luck.

Some Japanese reference works also gloss 禎 as “right” or “good.” Alone, it does not tell you whether it is a name, a quoted word, or a request for its reading; the surrounding context does.

Is 禎 a name character?

Yes, especially in Japanese personal names.

Japanese name references list 禎 as a name-use character, with the reading テイ and name readings such as さち and よし. In a person's name, it expresses a wish for good fortune, not everyday conversational happiness.

Mandarin reads 禎 as zhēn in Pinyin: roughly a tongue-curled “ch” followed by a short “en,” on a steady high tone. Japanese references give readings such as テイ, さち, and よし; check a person's preferred reading before saying their name.

Why does 禎 appear as 祯 or 禎?

They are connected spellings with distinct uses.

Simplified Chinese uses 祯 as the simplified form of 禎. Japanese name references also record 禎 as an old form alongside 禎. Which one belongs in a word or name depends on the writing convention it follows.

The compounds show when to read 禎 as part of a larger name. 禎祥 makes the auspicious-sign sense explicit; 崇禎 is a Ming reign name, so read or translate the whole title rather than isolating 禎.

Formal and auspicious: at home in names and classical compounds, unusual as casual chat shorthand.

Alone, it does not say “good luck” by itself; check the surrounding word or ask what was intended.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 禎 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
