What 秂 means
It names grain nearing seed formation. Shang oracle-bone inscriptions—divination records carved on bones and shells—show a related graph with 禾 above 人, a person carrying harvested grain.
That harvest graph is part of 年’s history: paleographic accounts trace its lower 人 as it was reshaped toward 千, with 秊 as a historical form on the way to 年. Dictionaries also list 秂 separately for a crop nearing seed formation. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education dictionary records a rare Mandarin reading, tū (roughly “too,” with a high, level tone), as a variant of 禿, the character meaning “bald.”
Archaic and specialist: use it in classical-text, dictionary, or character-history contexts.
If you mean “year,” use 年; reserve 秂 for its dictionary or paleographic roles.
