What 租 means
租 means renting, leasing, or the fee paid for it.
In Chinese compounds, order matters: 租房 means renting a home, 房租 is the rent due, and 出租 means renting property out. The character alone does not say whether someone is taking a place or offering one.
Why does 租 mean rent or a field tax?
The older meaning was a tax on fields or harvests. Qin manuscript forms include this character; the Han-era Shuowen Jiezi, a dictionary of Chinese characters, defines 租 as 田赋, a field tax. Its left-hand part 禾 points to grain; the right-hand part 且 contributes the sound, not another meaning.
Japan's 701 tax system grouped 租 with 庸 and 調. Its 租 was assessed on farmers and paid from their harvests. This historical tax use sits alongside the Chinese rental meanings in a different context.
What if someone sends only 租?
The character alone does not choose a reading. The language and phrase around it matter: in Chinese rental wording it can refer to renting, rent due, or renting out; in Japanese historical material it can name a field tax. Ask for the surrounding phrase if you cannot tell which meaning fits.
Practical rental wording in Chinese; the land-tax sense belongs to historical or tax-focused writing.
In a housing conversation, read 租 as rent; the tax sense needs historical or tax-related context.

1Why does 租 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
