What 稬 means
稬 is an older variant of 糯 for glutinous rice.
The Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, compiled in 121 CE, records 稬 as a local word for rice in the Pei region. In its written form, 禾 is the grain element and 耎 supplies the sound.
Later Chinese dictionaries link 稬 with 糯. In 糯, 米 is the grain element, while 需 supplies the sound; 糯 names sticky rice used in food and brewing.
Use 糯 in modern Chinese writing
For a modern Chinese sentence, food label, or recipe, use 糯. Keep 稬 when transcribing an older source, comparing variant forms, or discussing the spelling in character study.
That changes the written form, not the rice word: 稬 and 糯 belong to the same lexical history, while 稬 marks an older or source-bound variant.
Why does 稬 look unavailable?
As of 2026, 稬 is a text character, not emoji artwork.
A font without its glyph may show a fallback character or a missing-glyph box. That changes what you see, not which character was sent.
稬 is a historical or scholarly choice; ordinary modern Chinese food references use 糯.
For an ordinary modern Chinese food reference, use 糯; 稬 can read as archaic or source-bound.

1Will every font display 稬?
No. 稬 is drawn from a font, so missing coverage can show a fallback character or a missing-glyph box; this changes its visibility, not its meaning.
