Han character 穦

穦 is a rare Chinese character glossed as “fragrance” or “fragrant smell.” Mandarin references disagree: Taiwan lists bīn, an unaspirated p-like sound with a high, level tone; other records list pīn, with an aspirated p. Cantonese references list pan1. A historical dictionary links it to 馪, glossed as “abundant fragrance.”

What 穦 means

The trail is lexicographic. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education notes that 《說文》 does not list 穦; it cites 《字彙》 for 香氣也, “fragrance.”
