What 笁 means
Read it by the older word or name it stands in for.
In 天竺, 竺 is part of a Chinese sound-rendering of Sanskrit Sindhu, the name for the Indus. The name expanded from the Indus region to India; by the seventh century, it covered most of the subcontinent. Japanese literature also used 天竺 for faraway places. A 楚辞 verse gives 笁 the sense “thick,” linked to 篤.
An inscribed Tang-dynasty stone for Amoghavajra, an Indian Buddhist monk, carved in 781, attests this form.

1Why does 笁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
