What 笈 means
A portable case for books, clothes, or ritual gear. It could also stand for the books inside.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, defines 极 as a donkey’s load. Later commentary distinguishes it from 笈, a book box carried on foot. A Sui history completed in 636 CE records scholars carrying books to teachers.
In Japanese, 笈 (おい) is the pack of a yamabushi, a Shugendō mountain practitioner. Its ritual reading treats the carrier as a womb.
