What 笙 means
It names the shēng mouth organ, not music in general. Think of a bundle of bamboo pipes with reeds: you blow and suck to sound single notes or rich chords, which is why the sheng can carry a tune or cushion other instruments.
Its documented start is a 12th-century BCE ode placing the sheng in formal ritual and court music. Later legend credits Nü Wa, but no single inventor is historically secure; from court ritual it moved into folk, temple, and opera ensembles, and modern orchestras use it for harmony and color.
The tradition crossed borders with the character. Tang dynasty China passed it to Japan as shō, used in court gagaku, while Korea keeps it as saenghwang (笙簧) in court music.
