Han character 等

11594/20992

等 can mean “wait,” “equal,” “rank,” or “etc.”—the surrounding words decide. In Mandarin, its pronunciation is děng, also written deng3, and it appears in requests to wait, comparisons, and lists. Japanese and Korean use the character too, with their own readings and sentence patterns.

Text symbol

What 等 means

It can mean wait, equal, rank, or “and so on.”

In Chinese, 等人 means “wait for someone,” while 等 after a list means “etc.” In 等于, it means “equal to.” Placement changes its job: before the person being awaited, or after the things being listed.

A lone 等 can be a clipped “wait” in a Chinese conversation. If you were about to act, pause and check. If the language or situation is unclear, ask what the sender means.

Where did 等 come from?

It evolved through earlier forms of Chinese writing. Recorded forms include Chu manuscripts from the Warring States period, when rival states competed in ancient China. Later forms appear in seal script, used on seals, and clerical script, associated with scribes and officials.

Shuowen Jiezi, an ancient Chinese character dictionary, explains 等 as aligned bamboo writing slips: narrow strips used for written records. This traditional explanation connects it with ordering and equality; it does not establish exactly how the character was invented. Waiting is a later recorded sense. Japanese kanji and Korean hanja are uses of Chinese characters within those languages.

Does 等 mean wait in Japanese?

Don’t assume the Chinese waiting sense in Japanese. Japanese 等 appears in list markers and rank expressions; tō is one Japanese reading.

In Korean, 등 (deung) follows listed nouns to mean “and so on.” It is associated with the hanja 等, but the Korean spelling is a separate written form. Identify the surrounding language before translating.

Its tone comes from the sentence: a list ending and a request to wait do different work.

A bare 等 may ask you to wait in Chinese; don’t treat it as agreement.

Why does 等 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
