篊 character

篊 is a Chinese character for diverting water, bamboo or wood bundles, and bamboo fish traps. The sixth-century dictionary 玉篇 (Yupian) records the water sense; later Chinese lexicons add the bundle and fishing meanings. In Japanese, 篊 is read ひび (two short syllables, hi-bi), the word for stakes or brushwood set at sea for seaweed or oyster farming, or a fish enclosure; a Japanese text uses it in 1563.
