The older form 簍 is recorded in the Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, an early imperial Chinese reference work, where it is glossed as a bamboo cage. The entry analyzes 簍 as 竹 plus 婁, with 婁 supplying the sound. 篓 is the simplified Chinese form.
Ming dynasty records also use 篓 after a number as a measure word: 一篓香蕉 means one basketful of bananas. Fangyan, an early dictionary of regional speech, records small baskets called 簍 in Southern Chu and 箄 in Qin and Jin.
