What 篙 means
篙 is a pole pushed against the riverbed or shore to propel a boat; 撑篙 / 撐篙 means to punt.
The Western Han text 方言 defines 篙 as a boat-pushing tool. A later addition to 說文解字, an early Chinese character dictionary, calls it “what advances a boat” and analyzes 竹 as its meaning part and 高 as its sound part.
Japanese reads it さお (“pole”) or こう; Korean Hanja, Chinese characters used in Korean, reads it 고.

1Why does 篙 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
