What 篥 means
It names part of a reed instrument, not an emotion.
The surviving record names no single inventor. Early histories link 篳篥 to Koguryo music, and Tang-era records place 觱篥 in court ensembles. It was a loud, piercing melody instrument with western-region associations.
Japan took the tradition through continental music: in the Nara period it served 唐楽, then entered gagaku. Japanese use keeps 篥 almost entirely inside 篳篥; 觱篥 and 筚篥 are the related Chinese forms.
