What 籃 means
A woven basket, and in sport the hoop. In Chinese 籃 is a bamboo basket, also used as a basketful measure, as in a basket of fruit. The bamboo radical 竹 points to the material and 監 gives the sound lan.
The same basket gives modern sport words: 籃球 is basketball and the hoop, while older usage has 籃輿 for a bamboo sedan chair. Japanese reads the character as kago for basket. For Simplified Chinese, write 篮.

1Why does 籃 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
