What 粼 means
It shows stones through clear water. The Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 粼 as water among bank stones. A pre-Qin poem in the Shijing, an early Chinese poetry collection, says “扬之水,白石粼粼”—flowing water, gleaming white stones.
Today, 粼 most often appears doubled as 粼粼 for clear water or light flickering on it; 波光粼粼 means shimmering water. A Japanese literary example from 1683 uses 粼粼 for transparent water with riverbed stones visible.
Literary and scenic; 粼粼 paints water or visible stones.
粼 and 磷 are related spellings, but they are different characters.
