What 糟 means
It means “bad” or “spoiled” in present-day Chinese.
Shuowen Jiezi, an Eastern Han dictionary, defines 糟 as the grain dregs left after fermenting a drink. 米 means “grain”; 曹 hints at the sound. Its recorded older form uses 酉, a wine-related component.
酒糟 means wine dregs; 糟粕 keeps the residue sense. 糟糕 and 糟心 use 糟 negatively.

1Why does 糟 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
