What 紽 means
It names a measured silk count: five threads make one 紽.
The Book of Songs, a Chinese poetry collection, uses 紽 in 羔羊 (“Lamb”) for white silk trimming a lambskin garment. The character names a concrete textile measure.
The poem also names 緎 and 緫, terms tied to silkwork. Traditional glosses treat them as counts; a 2024 philology study records alternatives: 紽 as a knot or crossing, and the others as seams. Commentary from the Han period praises the officials as frugal and upright; another reading treats their feasting as satire. 紽 combines 糸, the silk-related side, with 它, which supplies its sound. It belongs to a historical sound family with 佗; that link explains their relationship but does not make the characters interchangeable.
Classical textile vocabulary; it names a measured silk unit.
It does not mean one individual thread.
