What 絟 means
For textiles, it names fine cloth or fine plant fiber.
Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary completed around 100 CE, defines 絟 as fine cloth. Later lexicons extend the meaning to fine 葛布 (kudzu cloth) and 细麻 (fine hemp), contrasting them with coarser 紵 cloth made from plant fiber.
A Han-era record of gifts between rulers lists 荃葛, or kudzu cloth; its commentary says the earlier wording was 絟葛.
Is 絟 the same as 拴?
Only for the “tie or fasten” sense.
Chinese dictionaries record 絟 as a variant spelling of 拴 in that verb sense. For ordinary writing about tying, 拴 is clearer; keep 絟 when quoting a source or writing the textile term. The two characters cannot be substituted across every use.
It belongs to historical or specialist textile vocabulary; in a verb context, it is a source-specific spelling of 拴.
For “tie,” choose 拴 unless preserving a source’s spelling.
