What 綝 means
綝 traditionally means “to stop.” The Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, analyzes it as 糸 (thread, the meaning part) plus 林 (the sound part). A later gloss connects thread with tying something so it stops.
It also has a dictionary gloss “good.” In 綝纚, 綝 is pronounced lín in Mandarin (roughly “leen,” with a rising tone) and describes hanging ornaments, clothes, or feathers. A Han-era omen text uses that image for a comet’s tail; 襂纚 is a related form of 綝纚. CJK fonts draw 綝 differently; Taiwan’s registry shows several styles and notes support in Windows 10 and later.
Classical and literary.
The hanging sense belongs to 綝纚, not to 綝 alone.
