What 緬 means
緬 means fine thread or far away. In Chinese, 緬懷 is remembrance and 緬邈 means remote. The Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, defines it as fine thread and analyzes 糸 as the thread element, with 面 as the sound element.
The Guliang Commentary, an early commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals, uses 緬 for remote; later writing also uses it for remembrance. The character's meaning moved from a concrete thread sense toward distance and memory, so no single gloss fits every word.
Why is 緬 in the name 緬甸?
緬甸 is the Chinese name for Myanmar. A 1960 study says the name spread after a Ming-era office called 緬甸宣慰司 was established, after 1427. It reviews competing origins: the Chinese sense “distant,” a Burmese name form Myantaing, and older proposals from Sanskrit Brahma or Pali Mram-ma. The name's etymology remains disputed.
Traditional Chinese writes 緬; simplified Chinese writes 缅. Japanese kanji references also record 緬 for fine thread and distant, and list 緬甸 as a historical name for Burma.
Literary and context-bound: compounds usually make the intended sense clear.
緬懷 carries remembrance; a lone 緬 does not say “I miss you.”

1Why does 緬 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
